THE PORTABILITY OF YOUR DATA IS IMPORTANT TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ENGAGE IN CORPORATE ESPIONAGE!
You have all kinds of data and some of it is easily accessed by the public and some of it would be catastrophic for your company to lose.
Everything else would be somewhere in between.
That’s fine as far as it goes, but you have to ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep in mind that the portability of your data is consistently changing.
By that I mean that your data is unfailingly becoming more and more portable.
For others, not just you.
Do you watch the latest technology to see new vulnerabilities? Your new vulnerabilities!
People who want your data in order to sell to others or just to mess with it will always have new and different choices on how to do it.
THE PATH TO BUSINESS ESPIONAGE AND HACKING IS SOCIAL ENGINEERING!
Twenty years ago those who engaged in this had fewer choices. Think of it. Think of the increased usage of:
- tablets and flash drives,
- smartphones, and
- transportable media devices.
I’ll bet you thought that the purpose of these devices was to make your life easier and more pleasant.
Did it occur to you also that actual result of new devices requires you to put more effort into your business security.
The reason is obvious. People who do not have your best interests at heart can use these to steal your important data.
And they use social engineering to do it.
Each and every day stop and think about who is accessing your important data and why are they accessing it.
How sure are you that the people accessing it are doing so for a valid reason? It’s really important for you to do so.
Also, how sure are you that access to that data is only for those who truly need to use it?
It is astonishing how often people who may have an ax to grind actually have access to information that they really have no business need for.
Perhaps needs had changed in the company and management never removed the access either because the issue never came up, or else they didn’t want to offend the person that didn’t need it any more.
That is management by negligence!
SOCIAL ENGINEERING IS PRACTICED EVERY DAY FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS!

And consistently review files accessible to the public to make sure no information there is now sensitive.
Watch and look carefully every day. Anything else is management by negligence!
